About Buddhist Altars

Buddhists frequently have personal shrines or altars in their homes. A proper altar holds images or representations of the Buddha's enlightened body, speech and mind and/or images of the Pure Land. These images serve as reminders that Buddhist practice aims to awaken these endowed qualities in ourselves.

Daily practice in front of an altar gives you the opportunity to achieve these qualities.  Using an altar as part of your practice can arouse your inner potential for peace, wisdom and love. Having a home altar enhances practice because it becomes a focal point from meditation, chanting, remembering loved ones and contemplation.
